Afternoon Pick-me-up

I have long been a morning person, and even as a young child felt that afternoons were depressing. Now that the warm weather is here, it is even more depressing. I have discovered what helps me wake up a bit and enjoy some energy in the lethargic afternoon doldrums.

First thing I do is swipe a few drops of rosemary essential oil on my face. It immediately gives me a lift, mentally and physically. Next, I make a cup of tea. It doesn't really matter what kind, though a caffeinated tea may be called for if I'm feeling really low. Today I have made a blend of sencha and nettle. Lastly, I pray the rosary. I have a hard time focusing if I just pray it by myself, so I follow along with a YouTube rosary video. Even though it is meditative, it gives me energy. I think it is restorative, better than a nap.

After the rosary I like to take a walk to the marina park and spend some time with my bare feet in the grass. I have read about Earthing, and believe that it can help with my afternoon slump. Plus it just feels good. I can't imagine Adam and Eve walking in the garden of Eden wearing shoes. We were meant to enjoy the sensation of bare feet in grass, water, sand, and soil. Two days ago my husband and I hiked to a little creek, and I convinced him to go barefoot in the muddy water. We got ourselves and our clothing muddy, it's true, but it felt so nice. It was a bit of fun after he had worked long hours.

Even though I find afternoons depressing in themselves, my youthful desire for noise to remedy it has been replaced with a longing for silence. I like to hear the birds, and our neighbor's wind chimes. I will listen to music while I do housework in the morning, but in the afternoon, as I create my healing space, I don't want to hear anything artificial.

I may just go ahead and put on the rosemary a second time. It really helps!
